Santa Maria Pear. Summer variety, quite juicy and characterized by high productivity and early fruiting. Due to these interesting features, its cultivation is gaining good interest in central-southern Italy. Maturation at the end of July.

Pear Pyrus communis (Rosaceae)
Hardy, sensitive to sandy soils, very clayey and calcareous if grafted onto quince. Quite demanding, it prefers fresh, deep, permeable, and rich soil. It is sensitive to drought and strong winds. The planting distance varies according to the shape of the trees. Same guidelines as for apple trees regarding planting density and pruning.

POLLINATION: Although certain varieties are self-fertile (Guyot, Conference), the pear requires the planting of at least two varieties to fruit well. The best pollinator varieties are: ‘Butirra Hardy’, ‘Decana del comizio’, ‘Passa Crassana’, ‘Kaiser’, and ‘William’.
FRUITING-HARVEST: To obtain beautiful fruits, thinning should be practiced in June, keeping only one or two pears positioned on the outside of the cluster. The resulting fruits will be larger.

Pest control treatments

Scab: it is the most threatening fungal disease in pears; defense begins with a preventive treatment at the appearance of green tips or mouse ears, using copper salts or calcium polysulfide, and continues with covering products.

Psilla: causes serious damage by soiling the vegetation and especially the fruits with a typical dark honeydew that makes them unsellable; today biological control is carried out thanks to the action of a predatory insect, “Anthocoris nemoralis” or broad-spectrum phosphor-organic products or the use of yellow oils (DNOC) at the start of the growing season.
