Description

Berkeley Giant American Blueberry Medium Ripening. Vigorous cultivar with good productivity, open growth habit. Excellent variety for the quality of its fruits. Large, light blue, waxy, spherical fruit with a medium-large peduncle scar, firm, pleasant taste but slightly aromatic.

Pot size 18 x 13 x 13 cm

Blueberry Characteristics:

Upright bushy shrub plant, height between 100 and 200 cm, with semi-woody branches and deciduous foliage that takes on beautiful autumn colors, decorative flowering. Large blue-violet fruits, abundant, highly appreciated fresh or in jam. Production mainly occurs on two or more year old branches from mixed or flowering buds. The flowers, generally self-fertile, are grouped in cylindrical clusters. Pollination is facilitated by entomofauna. Deciduous leaves are ovate-elongated, turning the typical red color in autumn. A perennial plant that can produce for many decades.

PLANTING: Can be grown throughout Italy but is sensitive to drought and calcareous soils. Prefers loose soils rich in organic matter and tends to be acidic; if lacking, add acidified compost to the planting hole. In warm regions, it can be protected with shading cloths. Requires frequent watering. Planting distance: 0.50 to 1 m in the row and 200-250 cm between rows.

CULTIVATION: Rustic crop, requires little care, emergency irrigation in summer, and balanced mineral fertilization with a predominance of nitrogen in spring and organic fertilization in late autumn. Can also be grown in pots with careful frequent watering and fertilization with slow-release fertilizers or fertigation.

PRUNING: At planting, slightly shorten the branches; in subsequent years, remove old branches in favor of new, more vigorous ones and thin the canopy to promote light penetration. Prune during winter.

TREATMENTS: In dry environments and for hobbyist cultivation, fungicide treatments are usually not necessary; however, two interventions are recommended, the first in autumn and the second at the start of the growing season with copper and wettable sulfur salts to prevent major adversities.
