PEACH (Prunus persica)
(Rosaceae) The peach tree is hardy but prefers temperate and warm climates. It adapts to all soils except those that are too wet and asphyxiating. It is sensitive to excess lime unless grafted onto suitable rootstocks (plum, almond, peach-almond, etc.). Avoid planting a peach tree in soil that has previously hosted this species. Lifespan: 10 to 25 years depending on planting conditions.
Pruning
The peach tree does not tolerate pruning well, which causes gum secretion. It should be done in February-March, at the beginning of flowering. Fruits form on the branches of the previous year. It is advisable to keep only the young, moderately vigorous shoots with a wide insertion angle.
Thinning
After the natural drop of young fruits, keep about 2 to 4 fruits per twig (branch) and remove all young shoots that do not bear fruit. For a better harvest, remove the leaves that hide the fruits.
