Actinidia Chinensis Pl. (Actinidiaceae)
Very vigorous and ornamental climbing plant, requires supports for cultivation on trellises or pergolas. Dioecious plant with female pistillate and male staminate individuals. Plant 1 male plant and 3-6 female plants. The fruit is very rich in vitamin C. Harvest late October to early November.
PLANTING: Can be grown throughout Italy but is sensitive to drought, prefers loose, deep, well-draining soils rich in organic matter. Requires frequent watering. Planting distance from 2.5x4 to 4x4 m.
CULTIVATION: Rustic crop, requires little care, balanced mineral fertilization with a predominance of nitrogen in spring and organic fertilization in late autumn; for calcareous soils, add chelated iron.
PRUNING: At planting, leave 2 or 3 buds per branch; in subsequent years, keep 6 to 8 branches with 5-8 buds each and remove branches that have produced. Prune during winter.
TREATMENTS: In dry environments and for hobbyist cultivation, no anti-fungal treatments are necessary.
