Description

The red celery has ancient origins and has been cultivated for over 300 years in the Piedmont countryside. It stands out from classic varieties due to the violet color at the base of the stalks, its flavor with a characteristic delicate almond aroma, and its intense fragrance. It is transplanted from April to June for harvesting from July to October. Like all celery, it appreciates generous and repeated organic fertilization during the growth period.

Growing Tips

Orto Mio guidelines for the species, to be adapted to the variety, local climate, and cultivation in soil or pots.

Exposure and Temperature

Sun, with shade during the hot summer hours. Growth is favored at 15–24 °C; protect early transplants, as prolonged cold can promote premature flowering.

Soil and Transplanting

Very fertile and draining soil, capable of retaining moisture, pH 6–7. Generally 25 cm in-row and 40–50 cm between rows. For bunches and celeriac, prefer May to mid-June; for aromatic leaves, the window is wider.

Watering

Water frequently in summer, allowing the surface to dry slightly. Thin out interventions in autumn and avoid waterlogging.

Fertilization

Generous initial fertilization 2–3 weeks before transplanting; support growth with distributed applications, approximately every twenty days.

Care and Harvesting

Weed, mulch in summer, and protect from the cold. Gradually collect the outer leaves for aromatic use; for the bunches, wait for adequate development. Celeriac generally has a longer cycle.
