Description

This American legume stands out for its cultivation versatility, thriving even in pots.

It requires permeable substrate and a temperate climate, with a vegetative growth reaching up to 30 cm.

A peculiar characteristic is the self-burial of the pods after flowering, which deepen 5-10 cm into the soil, reaching maturity between September and October.

It requires regular watering during the warm season, which should be stopped as harvest approaches.

Autumn leaf yellowing serves as the phenological indicator to proceed with pod extraction.

The seeds offer culinary versatility, suitable for roasting or making spreads.

Excellent in association with celery, cucumber, and leafy composites, this plant significantly contributes to the nitrogen enrichment of the soil.

Growing Tips

Orto Mio guidelines for the species, to be adapted to the variety, local climate, and cultivation in soil or pots.

Exposure and Soil

Full sun; growth favored at 20–30 °C. Loose, draining soil worked deeply, pH 6–7.5.

Transplanting

April–June, with warm soil. Generally 15–20 cm in-row and 40–60 cm between rows; protect early plantings in cooler areas.

Watering

Regular and moderate, especially during flowering and pod formation. Avoid waterlogging.

Fertilization

Prefer phosphorus and potassium without excess nitrogen; in poor soils, mature organic matter 3–4 weeks prior.

Care and Harvest

Gently hoe and keep the soil loose. A light hilling promotes underground fruit formation. Harvest approximately after 120 days, when the leaves yellow; uproot and dry, then cure the pods in a ventilated area.
