Growing Tips
Orto Mio guidelines for the species, to be adapted to the variety, local climate, and cultivation in soil or pots.
Exposure and Temperature
Choose full sun; in summer, a slight shading during the central hours is helpful. Optimal growth at 20–24 °C; protect early transplants from cold.
Soil and Transplanting
Fertile and draining soil, preferably pH 6–7. Transplanting from March, under protection, to August, depending on the climate. Generally space 40–50 cm in-row and 100 cm between rows; for sauce varieties, also 30 cm in-row.
Watering
Water regularly at the base, allowing the surface to dry between applications. Increase water during flowering and fruit swelling; avoid waterlogging and sudden shifts from drought to heavy watering.
Fertilization
Incorporate mature organic matter before transplanting. Distribute nutrients throughout the cycle, emphasizing potassium during production and avoiding excess nitrogen.
Care and Harvesting
Mulch. For stake tomatoes, provide supports and periodically remove suckers; for dwarf varieties, do not remove them. Harvest according to the variety and use: for sauce, prefer well-ripened fruits. Cut the stem if detaching risks damaging the plant.
Precautions for Grafted Plants
For the grafted format, keep the grafting point above the soil and remove any shoots that grow from the rootstock. Adapt supports and spacing to the increased vigor.
