Description

The Giant Black Magic Tuscan Kale is a modern selection of the ancient early Ligurian ecotype, which enhances its characteristics, improving uniformity and productivity. It matures 90-100 days after transplanting.

The seedlings of this variety have broader leaves and are less susceptible to bacterial diseases.

The “head” is always compact, light green in color, and is sought after for its excellent flavor.

When the broccoli is ready for harvest, it retains its organoleptic characteristics for a long time, “fading” very slowly.

The plant has superior vigor compared to the old ecotype and benefits from a planting density with greater spacing.

Transplant from August to October

Growing Tips

Orto Mio guidelines for the species, to be adapted to the variety, local climate, and cultivation in soil or pots.

Exposure and Temperature

Full sun or partial shade with at least six hours of direct sunlight. Favorable growth at 20–25 °C; intense heat reduces quality. Protect when temperatures approach zero.

Soil and Transplanting

Fertile and draining soil, pH 6–7. Generally 40–50 cm in-row and 50–60 cm between rows. In spring, prefer March–April; for autumn harvest, the timing varies between late July and September depending on the area and variety.

Watering

Avoid both drought and waterlogging. Moderate watering after transplanting; more water during head growth.

Fertilization

Generous initial fertilization with organic matter; adjust subsequent applications to development without exceeding nitrogen levels.

Care and Harvesting

Weed and protect with non-woven fabric during cool periods. Harvest the compact head before the buds open or yellow. For classic broccoli, cut 5–10 cm below the head; keep the plant for side shoots.
