Avoid water stagnation

Description

Ancient variety, typical of Piedmont, where it has been cultivated in Monferrato for over 200 years. A Slow Food presidium for its quality, it is a medium-small pepper, in yellow and red colors, with a characteristic shape often resembling a spinning top. It has very thick flesh, excellent pickled or sweet and sour. Easy to cultivate thanks to its vigor and tolerance to sunburn. It can be stored in the freezer for winter.

Growing Tips

Orto Mio guidelines for the species, to be adapted to the variety, local climate, and cultivation in soil or pots.

Exposure and Temperature

Full sun, with light shading during the hottest summer hours. Favorable temperatures of 16–27 °C; protect transplants from the cold.

Soil and Transplanting

Very fertile and draining soil, preferably pH 6–7. Raise the beds in clayey soils. Transplant from March, protected, to June depending on the climate; normally 40–50 cm in the row and 100 cm between rows.

Irrigation

Maintain regular moisture; increase water with heat and production without creating stagnation. Avoid deficiencies during the swelling of the fruits. Drip irrigation is recommended.

Fertilization

Incorporate mature organic matter 2–3 weeks before transplanting; continue with split feeding during the cycle, approximately every three weeks.

Care and Harvesting

Mulch and tie the stem to a stake when it exceeds 30 cm; also support the heavy branches. Remove the first fruits until the plant strengthens. Harvest when green or at the mature color of the variety, cutting the peduncle with shears.
