Description

Great Lakes Green Brazilian Lettuce

Orto Mio — 9 plants in cubes. Early iceberg-type lettuce with a full heart. It can be harvested whole or by picking the outer leaves. It is particularly suitable for spring and autumn cultivation; in mountain gardens, it also adapts to the summer period. The current name is Great Lakes, previously indicated by the producer as ex Masaida.

Growing Tips

Orto Mio guidelines for the species, to be adapted to the variety, local climate, and cultivation in soil or pots.

Exposure and Temperature

Sun, with partial shade during hot summer hours. Growth is favored at 15–25 °C; tolerance to heat and cold depends on the variety.

Soil and Transplanting

Fertile and draining soil, pH 6–7. Generally 20–25 cm in-row and 40 cm between rows. In cubes, leave at least one-third of the clod above the soil. Choose varieties suitable for the season; transplanting every 10–15 days allows for staggered harvests.

Watering

Keep the soil moist without waterlogging, allowing the surface to dry. Increase frequency in the heat; near harvest, water at the base, avoiding the foliage.

Fertilization

Moderate inputs before transplanting; intervene again after 2–3 weeks according to growth.

Care and Harvesting

Weed between rows and protect with non-woven fabric or tunnels during cold periods. Harvest the head when the heart is full, or progressively pick some outer leaves. The cycle varies approximately from 30–40 days in summer to 80–100 in winter.
