Il consiglio dell'ortolano
When transplanting, a third of the cube must remain above ground.

Description

The tradition returns: new selection of “queen of the ice”, just like the old days. It has finely serrated leaves of incredible crunchiness and medium green color. For spring and autumn harvests. Cycle of 40-60 days. Avoid transplanting in July and August in the plains. Water without wetting the leaves.

Growing Tips

Orto Mio guidelines for the species, to be adapted to the variety, local climate, and cultivation in soil or pots.

Exposure and Temperature

Sun, with partial shade during hot summer hours. Growth favored at 15–25 °C; heat and cold tolerance depend on the variety.

Soil and Transplanting

Fertile and draining soil, pH 6–7. Generally 20–25 cm in-row and 40 cm between rows. In cubes, leave at least one third of the clod above the soil. Choose varieties suitable for the season; transplanting every 10–15 days allows for staggered harvests.

Watering

Keep the soil moist without waterlogging, allowing the surface to dry. Increase frequency in heat; near harvest, water at the base, avoiding the foliage.

Fertilization

Moderate inputs before transplanting; intervene again after 2–3 weeks according to development.

Care and Harvesting

Weed between rows and protect with non-woven fabric or tunnels during cold periods. Harvest the head when the heart is full, or progressively take some outer leaves. The cycle varies approximately from 30–40 days in summer to 80–100 in winter.
