Description
Description
The Metro or String Bean (also known as 'climbing asparagus') is a very special climbing bean that is easy to grow, climbing on supports like canes or nets about 2 meters high.
It produces tasty pods that are very long (up to 50-60 cm), but it's best to harvest them at 30-40 cm to keep them tender and without 'strings'.
Fertilize generously for prolonged production.
Growing Tips
Orto Mio guidelines for the species, to be adapted to the variety, local climate, and cultivation in soil or pots.
Exposure and Soil
Full sun, at least 6–8 hours. Mild climate, preferably 17–25 °C. Fertile, loose, and well-draining soil, pH 6–7.5.
Transplanting
From March, protected, to August. Dwarfs: generally 10 × 50 cm; climbers: 20 × 70 cm, with supports. Monthly transplants promote continuous production.
Watering
Light watering until establishment; then regular, without waterlogging. Especially avoid deficiencies and fluctuations in moisture during flowering and pod setting.
Fertilization
Balanced nutrition, suited to soil fertility; avoid excess nitrogen. In poor soils, incorporate mature organic matter in advance.
Care and Harvesting
Weed very superficially and mulch in the heat. Harvest frequently well-developed but tender pods, before the seeds swell. The first harvest is generally around fifty days, later for the Metro climber.
