Description

Paesanello Pepper "look to the sky", an ancient variety of sweet pepper primarily used dried.

Typical of the Abruzzo region, the fruits have a characteristic "upward" growth habit that earned it the nickname "look to the sky".

Measuring 10-12 cm long, with an elongated conical shape, it is harvested when it turns a deep red color, to be dried in traditional necklaces.

After air drying, the drying is completed in a ventilated oven at low temperatures.

It can then be ground into powder or crumbled at the time of use, as a seasoning for many dishes.

The plant is vigorous yet compact and is distinguished by excellent production. It can be grown both in greenhouses and in open fields.

Growing Tips

Orto Mio guidelines for the species, to be adapted to the variety, local climate, and cultivation in soil or pots.

Exposure and Temperature

Full sun, with light shading during the hottest summer hours. Favorable temperatures of 16–27 °C; protect transplants from cold.

Soil and Transplanting

Very fertile and draining soil, preferably pH 6–7. Raise the beds in clayey soils. Transplant from March, protected, to June depending on the climate; typically 40–50 cm in-row and 100 cm between rows.

Irrigation

Maintain regular moisture; increase water with heat and production without creating stagnation. Avoid deficiencies during berry swelling. Drip irrigation is recommended.

Fertilization

Incorporate mature organic matter 2–3 weeks before transplanting; continue with split nutrition throughout the cycle, approximately every three weeks.

Care and Harvesting

Mulch and tie the stem to a support when it exceeds 30 cm; also support the laden branches. Remove the first fruits until the plant strengthens. Harvest when green or at the mature color of the variety, cutting the peduncle with shears.
