Growing Tips

Orto Mio guidelines for the species, to be adapted to the variety, local climate, and cultivation in soil or pots.

Exposure and Temperature

Sun or partial shade, beneficial in summer. Growth favored at 15–24 °C; protect from cold during early transplants.

Soil and Transplanting

Fertile, cool, and well-draining soil, pH 6.5–7.5. Swiss chard: 20–25 cm in-row and 35–40 cm between rows. Leafy greens and root chard: generally 10 × 30 cm. One seedling per cell encourages larger clusters or roots.

Watering

Frequent and moderate watering, keeping the soil moist without waterlogging. The producer suggests approximately 1–2 interventions weekly in cooler periods and 3–5 in summer.

Fertilization

Enrich the soil with organic matter; repeat feeding if growth is stunted.

Care and Harvesting

Shallow hoeing and protection during cold periods. For Swiss chard, harvest the outer leaves leaving the heart; for leafy greens, make cuts maintaining 3–4 cm from the soil. Root chard is harvested when the taproot is developed.
