Growing Tips
Orto Mio guidelines for the species, to be adapted to the variety, local climate, and cultivation in soil or pots.
Exposure and Temperature
Full sun. Optimal growth at 24–30 °C during the day and 18–20 °C at night; protect early transplants from cold.
Soil and Transplanting
Fertile and draining soil, pH 6–7. Transplant from mid-March, under protection, to June depending on the climate. For classic varieties, leave 80–100 cm in the row and 150 cm between rows.
Watering
Water without waterlogging and allow the surface to dry. Increase water between flowering and swelling; reduce significantly or suspend about seven days before harvest to enhance quality and minimize splitting.
Fertilization
Add mature organic matter before transplanting and balanced nutrition during the cycle. Potassium is important for fruit growth, especially in deficient soils.
Care and Harvesting
Mulch and protect from cold. Topping is not always necessary. Harvest generally occurs in 65–80 days; interpret the specific signals of the variety, including skin color and, where present, cracking around the peduncle.
