Growing Tips
Orto Mio guidelines for the species, to be adapted to the variety, local climate, and cultivation in soil or pots.
Exposure and Temperature
Choose full sun; in summer, a slight shade during the central hours is helpful. Optimal growth at 20–24 °C; protect early transplants from the cold.
Soil and Transplanting
Fertile and draining soil, preferably pH 6–7. Transplant from March, under protection, to August, depending on the climate. Generally space 40–50 cm in the row and 100 cm between rows; for sauce varieties, also 30 cm in the row.
Watering
Water regularly at the base, allowing the surface to dry between interventions. Increase water during flowering and fruit swelling; avoid waterlogging and sudden shifts from drought to heavy watering.
Fertilization
Incorporate mature organic matter before transplanting. Distribute nutrients throughout the cycle, emphasizing potassium in production and avoiding excess nitrogen.
Care and Harvesting
Mulch. For pole tomatoes, provide supports and periodically remove suckers; for dwarf varieties, do not remove them. Harvest according to the variety and use: for sauce, prefer well-ripened fruits. Cut the stem if detaching risks damaging the plant.
