When transplanting, a third of the cube must remain above ground.

Description

A true specialty known as “Zuccherina”, highly appreciated for the quality and crunchiness of its heart, excellent also in pinzimonio. Very healthy and resilient, it can be easily grown all year round, and has good field durability. Water in the morning, trying not to wet the leaves to prevent Downy Mildew.

Growing Tips

Orto Mio guidelines for the species, to be adapted to the variety, local climate, and cultivation in soil or pots.

Exposure and Temperature

Sun, with partial shade during the hot summer hours. Growth is favored at 15–25 °C; tolerance to heat and cold depends on the variety.

Soil and Transplanting

Fertile and draining soil, pH 6–7. Generally 20–25 cm in-row and 40 cm between rows. In cubes, leave at least one third of the clod above the soil. Choose varieties suitable for the season; transplanting every 10–15 days allows for staggered harvests.

Watering

Keep the soil moist without waterlogging, allowing the surface to dry. Increase frequency in the heat; near harvest, water at the base, avoiding the foliage.

Fertilization

Moderate applications before transplanting; intervene again after 2–3 weeks according to development.

Care and Harvesting

Weed between the rows and protect with non-woven fabric or tunnels during cold periods. Harvest the head when the heart is full, or progressively take some outer leaves. The cycle varies approximately from 30–40 days in summer to 80–100 in winter.
