Il consiglio dell'ortolano
grows well anywhere, frequent and abundant watering

Description

It is the classic Swiss chard, with dark leaves and wide, fleshy stalks. The compact plant makes it easy to cultivate even in small gardens. It is harvested 30-60 days after transplanting, by cutting the entire clump or stripping the plant starting from the outer stalks.

Growing Tips

Orto Mio guidelines for the species, to be adapted to the variety, local climate, and cultivation in soil or pots.

Exposure and Temperature

Full sun or partial shade, beneficial in summer. Growth is favored at 15–24 °C; protect from cold during early transplants.

Soil and Transplanting

Fertile, cool, and well-draining soil, pH 6.5–7.5. Chard: 20–25 cm in-row and 35–40 cm between rows. Leafy greens and root chard: generally 10 × 30 cm. One seedling per cell promotes larger clumps or roots.

Watering

Frequent and moderate watering, keeping the soil moist without waterlogging. The producer suggests approximately 1–2 interventions weekly in cool periods and 3–5 in summer.

Fertilization

Enrich the soil with organic matter; repeat feeding if growth is stunted.

Care and Harvesting

Shallow hoeing and protection during cold periods. For the stalks, harvest the outer leaves while leaving the heart; for leafy greens, make cuts maintaining 3–4 cm from the soil. Root chards are harvested when the taproot is developed.
