Il consiglio dell'ortolano
Add plenty of organic matter when transplanting

Description

A species related to melon, among the most sought after for its high quality and digestibility, with elongated light green fruits and a rough skin. The fruit is consumed when young. The plant is sensitive to powdery mildew, which can be easily prevented with sulfur (Organic).
Transplanting is done from March to June

Growing Tips

Orto Mio guidelines for the species, to be adapted to the variety, local climate, and cultivation in soil or pots.

Exposure and Temperature

Full sun or partial shade with at least six hours of direct sunlight; shading is useful during hot summer days. Growth is favored at 20–30 °C; protect from cold.

Soil and Transplanting

Fertile, cool, and well-draining soil, pH 6–7. Transplanting from March, protected, until August depending on the climate. Generally, 40–50 cm between plants in a row and 100 cm between rows.

Watering

Maintain regular moisture without waterlogging. Water needs increase from flowering. Quantity and frequency depend on heat and soil: the producer recommends 1–2 interventions weekly in cooler periods and 3–5 in summer.

Fertilization

Prepare the soil with rich organic fertilization and support production with applications every 2–3 weeks.

Care and Harvesting

Mulch and set up nets or supports for vertical cultivation. Promptly remove the first small or deformed fruits. Harvest before yellowing, cutting the stem; the first quality fruits typically arrive after 30–40 days, with climatic variations.
