---------------------------------------------

PEAR (Pyrus communis)
(Rosaceae) Hardy, sensitive to sandy soils, very clayey and calcareous if grafted on quince. Quite demanding, prefers cool, deep, permeable, and rich soil. Sensitive to drought and strong winds. Planting distance varies according to the shape of the trees. Same guidelines as for apple trees regarding planting spacing and pruning.

Pollination:
Although some varieties are self-fertile (Guyot, Conference), the pear requires the planting of at least two varieties to fruit well. The best pollinator varieties are: Butirra Hardy, Decana del comizio, Passa Crassana, Kaiser, and William.

Fruit Production - Harvest:
To obtain beautiful fruits, thinning should be practiced in June, keeping only one or two pears positioned on the outside of the cluster. The resulting fruits will be larger.
