CURRANT Rubus idaeus L. (Rosaceae)

Deciduous bushy plant, quite vigorous, with a height ranging from 50 to 200 cm, with upright branches and stems; production mainly occurs on two-year-old branches from mixed or flowering buds. The flowers, generally self-fertile, are gathered in pendulous racemes (clusters). Deciduous leaves, simple palmately lobed with serrated edges, more or less rounded.

PLANTING: It can be grown throughout Italy but is sensitive to drought; it prefers loose soils, and for heavy soils, add fertilized peat to the planting hole. In warm regions, it should be planted in semi-shaded areas. Requires frequent watering. Planting distance: 0.80 to 1 m within the row and 200-250 cm between rows.

CULTIVATION: Rustic crop, requires little care, with emergency irrigation during the summer and balanced mineral fertilization with a predominance of nitrogen in spring and organic fertilization in late autumn. It can also be grown in pots, ensuring frequent watering and fertilization with slow-release fertilizers or fertigation.

PRUNING: At planting, leave 2 or 3 buds per branch; in subsequent years, retain 6 to 8 branches and remove the branches that have produced. Prune at the end of winter.

TREATMENTS: In dry environments and for hobbyist cultivation, fungicide treatments are usually not necessary; however, two interventions are recommended: the first in autumn and the second at the start of the growing season with copper and wettable sulfur salts to prevent major adversities.
