Growing Tips
Orto Mio guidelines for the species, to be adapted to the variety, local climate, and cultivation in soil or pots.
Exposure and Temperature
Full sun; tolerates partial summer shade. Growth is favored at 15–20 °C. Protect from frost; strong temperature fluctuations promote premature flowering.
Soil and Transplanting
Fertile and draining soil, pH 6–7. Generally 25–35 cm in-row and 40 cm between rows. Transplant the cubes on the surface, leaving one third above the soil. Choose the timing according to the variety and desired harvest.
Watering
Regular in summer, moderate in autumn if it rains little. Allow the surface to dry; near harvest, avoid wetting the foliage.
Fertilization
Moderate inputs, limiting nitrogen; for late varieties, favor potassium and suspend one month before harvest.
Care and Harvesting
Weed between the rows and protect during cold periods. The heart usually begins to form after 35–45 days; harvest when developed, according to the varietal cycle. Tying may promote more tender leaves.
