How to Prepare for Transplanting:
• SOIL AND EXPOSURE: adapts to any type of soil, preferring medium-textured, fresh, fertile, and well-drained soils. In a sunny position, sheltered from winds.
• CLIMATE: ideal growth temperature of 20-24°C; between 0 and -2°C, the plant risks dying. For fruit setting, optimal minimum temperature is 9-13°C, maximum 22-24°C; above 32°C, pollen loses vitality.
• TIME AND METHOD OF TRANSPLANTING: in the greenhouse from February, from late March to April 15 in the open field with protection. Then without protection. It is advisable to bury a good amount of organic matter at the time of transplanting (if not done previously) and to add quality soil around the root zone. The tomato seedling, unlike other species, can be planted deeper, burying more than half of the stem if well developed.
• FERTILIZATION: a couple of weeks before transplanting, bury an abundant amount of organic matter and a bit of high-quality ternary fertilizer. At transplanting, spread 2 handfuls of quality soil around the root ball of the seedling. After transplanting, fertilize every 3-4 weeks, favoring phosphorus and nitrogen in the early stages, until a well-developed plant is formed. Potassium from swelling to ripening.
• WATERING: abundant at transplanting, then continue to keep the soil moist, carefully avoiding waterlogging. Check for the formation of cracks that disperse water, eliminating them with periodic superficial tillage of the soil. Water generously during the peak summer period, with high temperatures. Reduce watering when many fruits are ripe.
• PROTECTION: in very early transplants and in hilly areas, it is useful to plant on covered soil with mulch and protect the plants with agro-fleece, supported by hoops. After 2-4 weeks, the agro-fleece can be removed.
• CARE AND MAINTENANCE: when the plant reaches 30 cm in height, it should be tied to a support (stake, pole, or string). Remove the axillary shoots, leaving only the top except for determinate (bushy) varieties for sauce and table use.
• TREATMENTS: it is advisable to treat frequently with Bordeaux mixture (copper). Other products as needed.
• PRODUCTION AND HARVEST: from 4-5 kg to 9-10 kg from the greenhouse.
• STORAGE: depending on the variety and ripening stage, they can be stored for 5-15 days in the refrigerator at 3-6 °C.
• CROP COMPANIONS: They can benefit from the proximity of carrots, chicory, lettuce, cabbage, radishes, basil, and spinach.
• PESTS: Diseases: downy mildew, wilt, bacterial infections. Animal pests: aphids, red spider mite, stink bugs. Viruses.
• CLIMATIC ADVERSITIES: fruit scald, cracking from excess water, frost, root asphyxiation, and blossom end rot from drought.
