Growing Tips
Orto Mio guidelines for the species, to be adapted to the variety, local climate, and cultivation in soil or pots.
Exposure and Temperature
Full sun and warm climate. Cold and very high temperatures slow down growth and ripening; protect early transplants.
Soil and Transplanting
Well-drained, deeply worked soil, pH 6–7. Transplant from mid-March, protected, to June depending on the climate. General distance: 100 cm in-row and 200 cm between rows, up to 300 cm for very vigorous varieties.
Watering
Water regularly, especially during flowering and fruit growth; wait for the surface to dry. Avoid waterlogging. For storage squash, suspend watering about ten days before harvest.
Fertilization
Use mature organic matter in moderate amounts; avoid excess nitrogen. Potassium during swelling enhances fruit quality.
Care and Harvesting
Mulch and separate ripening fruits from the ground with support. Storage squash generally matures in 90–130 days. Trombetta di Albenga and Lagenaria are harvested young, according to the intended use.
