Growing Tips

Orto Mio guidelines for the species, to be adapted to the variety, local climate, and cultivation in soil or pots.

Exposure and Temperature

Sun in cool seasons, partial shade in summer. Growth is favored at 10–15 °C; it is particularly sensitive to intense heat.

Soil and Transplanting

Well-draining soil, pH 5.5–7. Generally 5 cm in-row and 25 cm between rows; it is possible to cluster the cubes for cut harvesting. Leave at least one third above the soil. Transplanting from February to October, with greater difficulty in summer.

Watering

Keep the soil moist with small frequent waterings, avoiding water stagnation: approximately 1–2 interventions weekly in cool dry conditions and 3–4 in summer.

Fertilization

Initial organic fertilization; intervene after 2–3 weeks if the seedlings are growing slowly.

Care and Harvesting

Weed and protect with non-woven fabric in cold weather; provide shade in summer. Generally harvest after 20–40 days, leaving 2–3 cm of base and some leaves to allow for further cuts.
