Description

Refined variety, typical of the Campania tradition, also known as “minestra nera”. From the stem of the plant, which is very vigorous, many tender shoots emerge, which can be harvested for an extended period, starting 70-90 days after transplanting. It can be used in many recipes, such as soups and broths, but it is also excellent when stewed and as a seasoning for pasta and polenta. In the garden, it can be intercropped with Swiss chard, spinach, celery, tomato, leek, and kohlrabi.

Growing Tips

Orto Mio guidelines for the species, to be adapted to the variety, local climate, and cultivation in soil or pots.

Exposure and Temperature

Full sun or partial shade with at least six hours of direct sunlight. Favorable growth at 20–25 °C; intense heat reduces quality. Protect when temperatures approach zero.

Soil and Transplanting

Fertile and well-draining soil, pH 6–7. Generally 40–50 cm in-row and 50–60 cm between rows. In spring, prefer March–April; for autumn harvest, the timing varies between late July and September depending on the area and variety.

Irrigation

Avoid both drought and waterlogging. Moderate watering after transplanting; more water during head growth.

Fertilization

Generous initial fertilization with organic matter; adjust subsequent applications according to development without exceeding nitrogen levels.

Care and Harvesting

Weed and protect with non-woven fabric during cool periods. Harvest the compact head before the buds open or yellow. For classic broccoli, cut 5–10 cm below the head; keep the plant for side shoots.
