Il consiglio dell'ortolano
Plant on moulded soil. The fruits are ripe between 45 and 50 days after their formation

Description

Ancient variety, highly appreciated for its quality, thanks to the always very sweet flesh and the "fine grain" that melts in your mouth, like the watermelons of the past. A bit less productive compared to modern varieties. Matures in about 85 days after transplanting.

Growing Tips

Orto Mio guidelines for the species, to be adapted to the variety, local climate, and cultivation in soil or pots.

Exposure and Temperature

Full sun. Favorable growth at 24–30 °C during the day and 15–20 °C at night; protect transplants from the cold.

Soil and Transplanting

Very fertile and well-draining soil. Transplanting from late March, protected, to June depending on the climate. For large varieties: generally 80–100 cm in-row and 150–200 cm between rows; mini and grafted varieties require specific spacing.

Watering

Regular, without waterlogging, allowing the surface to dry. Increase watering from flowering to fruit growth; adjust according to soil and temperature.

Fertilization

Initial rich organic fertilization; balanced nutrition, paying attention to potassium during production.

Care and Harvesting

Mulch and protect early transplants. Harvest generally in 60–90 days depending on variety and climate. Evaluate multiple signals together: yellowing of the support surface, changes in the skin and peduncle, possible drying of the tendril.
