Growing:
Wild strawberries can be transplanted from January to May and from August to September. The plants should be spaced 20 cm apart in the row and 30 cm between rows, without burying the crown of the plant. For the first month, it is advisable not to fertilize and it is important to cut the first flowers to strengthen the plant. It can also be planted in hanging pots. This will create a beautiful visual effect, as the plant will cascade outside the pot. When planted near Borage, it will attract bees that will pollinate the strawberries.
Growing Tips
Orto Mio guidelines for the species, to be adapted to the variety, local climate, and cultivation in soil or pots.
Exposure and Temperature
Sun or partial shade; in small pots during summer, avoid the hottest sun. Growth is favored at 15–26 °C; protect flowering from cold snaps.
Soil and Transplanting
Soil rich in organic matter and well-draining, pH 5.5–7. Keep the crown visible, without burying it. In a single row: 30 cm in the row and 100 cm between rows. Prefer spring for remontant varieties and late summer for single-cropping varieties.
Watering
Keep the soil moist, never soggy. Drip irrigation is useful to avoid wetting leaves and fruits. For summer transplants, use small frequent waterings until establishment.
Fertilization
Fractionated and not too concentrated applications: strawberries are sensitive to salinity. Potassium is important after fruit formation.
Care and Harvesting
Mulch and shade new summer transplants. Single-cropping: spring harvest; remontant: prolonged production. Harvest ripe fruits frequently, depending on temperature and variety.
