Growing Tips
Orto Mio guidelines for the species, to be adapted to the variety, local climate, and cultivation in soil or pots.
Exposure and Soil
Sun or partial shade for a few hours. Well-draining soil, preferably pH 6–7; in heavy soils, prepare raised beds.
Transplanting
Preferred period mid-November–March. Classic garlic: 15 × 30 cm; aglione: 25 × 50 cm. Adapt the planting to the type and soil.
Watering
Water during drought, especially during bulb swelling. Regular rainfall may suffice. Avoid waterlogging and suspend watering about fifteen days before harvest.
Fertilization
Organic matter in advance, avoiding inputs close to transplanting. Balanced nutrition, with attention to sulfur and without excess nitrogen.
Care, Harvesting, and Storage
Weed between the rows. In varieties that produce them, promptly cut the scapes. For storage, harvest when the basal leaves yellow or dry; allow bulbs to dry in a ventilated area protected from rain, then store in a dry place.
