Growing Tips

Exposure and Temperature

Sun; grows best at 20–25 °C and is sensitive to cold. Protect transplants if nights drop below 10 °C.

Soil and Transplanting

Fertile, cool, and well-draining soil, pH 5.5–7; raised beds in compact soils. Transplant in April–May, generally 40 × 80 cm.

Watering

Keep the soil moist without waterlogging; increase frequency in summer. The last watering should be done about two weeks before harvest.

Fertilization

Rich organic fertilization in advance; nutrition with adequate amounts of nitrogen and potassium.

Care, Harvesting, and Storage

Mulch in summer and protect from cold returns. Generally harvest after 150–180 days, before the first frosts, digging carefully to avoid damaging the roots. Once dry, store in the dark above 15 °C.
