Growing Tips

Orto Mio guidelines for the species, to be adapted to the variety, local climate, and cultivation in soil or pots.

Exposure and Temperature

Full sun and warm climate. Cold and very high temperatures slow down growth and ripening; protect early transplants.

Soil and Transplanting

Deeply worked and well-drained soil, pH 6–7. Transplant from mid-March, protected, to June depending on the climate. General distance: 100 cm in the row and 200 cm between rows, up to 300 cm for very vigorous varieties.

Watering

Water regularly especially during flowering and fruit growth; wait for the surface to dry. Avoid waterlogging. For storage pumpkins, suspend watering about ten days before harvest.

Fertilization

Use mature organic matter in moderate amounts; avoid excess nitrogen. Potassium during swelling promotes fruit quality.

Care and Harvesting

Mulch and separate ripening fruits from the ground with a support. Storage pumpkins generally mature in 90–130 days. Trombetta di Albenga and Lagenaria are instead harvested young, according to the intended use.
