Growing Tips

Orto Mio guidelines for the species, to be adapted to the variety, local climate, and cultivation in soil or pots.

Exposure and Temperature

Sun; above 26 °C, partial shade is appreciated. Favorable growth at 20–25 °C. Move outside when minimum temperatures remain above 10 °C.

Soil and Transplanting

Fertile, cool, and draining soil, preferably pH 5.5–6.5. Transplant from late April, protected if necessary, to July. Generally 20–25 cm in-row and 25–35 cm between rows; the Glacial variety requires more space.

Watering

Water often with small amounts, at the base and without wetting the leaves: moisture on the foliage promotes downy mildew.

Fertilization

Organic fertilization before transplanting; during the cycle, support leaf production with monthly applications.

Care and Harvesting

After 20–30 days, start pinching the tips every 7–10 days, before flower formation. Cutting encourages new shoots and allows for leaf harvesting. Prefer the cool hours of the morning. Protect from prolonged rains.
