Growing Tips
Orto Mio guidelines for the species, to be adapted to the variety, local climate, and cultivation in soil or pots.
Exposure and Temperature
Full sun; tolerates summer partial shade. Growth is favored at 15–20 °C. Protect from frost; strong temperature fluctuations promote premature flowering.
Soil and Transplanting
Fertile, well-draining soil, pH 6–7. Generally 25–35 cm in-row and 40 cm between rows. Transplant the cubes on the surface, leaving one-third above the soil. Choose the timing based on variety and desired harvest.
Watering
Regular in summer, moderate in autumn if rainfall is low. Allow the surface to dry; avoid wetting the foliage close to harvest.
Fertilization
Moderate inputs, limiting nitrogen; for late varieties, prioritize potassium and suspend fertilization one month before harvest.
Care and Harvesting
Weed between rows and protect during cold periods. The heart typically begins to form after 35–45 days; harvest when developed, according to the varietal cycle. Tying can promote more tender leaves.
