Description

The White May Onion has a flat bulb and is early and prized for its delicately sweet, mildly pungent flavor. In the kitchen, it shines when baked. Limited shelf life.

Growing Tips

Orto Mio guidelines for the species, to be adapted to the variety, local climate, and cultivation in soil or pots.

Exposure and Temperature

Prefer sunlight. Favorable growth at 10–21 °C; bulb formation and growth require higher temperatures. Strong fluctuations can promote premature flowering.

Soil and Transplanting

Well-draining soil, pH 6–7; raise beds in heavy soils. Generally 10–15 × 30 cm per bulb, 5 × 30 cm for sets. Short-day varieties: October–November; long-day: March–May.

Watering

In the early stages, water only if necessary. During drought and bulb swelling, increase regularity, avoiding waterlogging. Adjust watering according to rainfall and soil conditions.

Fertilization

Apply manure in advance, in the previous autumn, avoiding applications close to transplanting. Balanced nutrition during growth.

Care, Harvesting, and Storage

Shallow hoeing. For bulbs to be stored, wait for the natural bending of the stem and the lodging of the leaves. Dry in a ventilated area protected from rain, then store in a dry place, periodically removing deteriorated bulbs.
