Description

Loch Ness giant thornless blackberry, late variety. A very vigorous cultivar with high sucker production and good yield.

Giant thornless blackberry Rubus fruticosus (Rosaceae)

Deciduous shrub with a height ranging from 80 to 250 cm, with a perennial rootstock and partially erect biennial canes known as suckers in the first year and fruiting canes in the second. Production occurs exclusively on fruiting canes. Persistent foliage, finely serrated. Excellent for decorating walls, pergolas, fences, etc. Produces large, very sweet black fruits during the summer. We offer various varieties, with either upright or trailing growth habits.

PLANTING: Can be grown throughout Italy, prefers loose soils; for heavy soils, add fertilized peat to the planting hole. Plants should be arranged in rows spaced 40-50 cm apart within the row and 200-250 cm between rows. It is advisable to set up a row of posts spaced 200 cm apart with three support wires to which the main canes should be tied.

CULTIVATION: Rustic crop, requires little care, with supplemental irrigation during the summer and balanced mineral fertilization with a predominance of nitrogen in spring and organic fertilization in late autumn. Can also be grown in pots with frequent irrigation and fertilization using slow-release fertilizers or fertigation.

PRUNING: In winter, remove the two-year-old canes that have fruited and, if necessary, thin out the one-year-old suckers.

TREATMENTS: In dry environments and for hobbyist cultivation, fungicide treatments are usually not necessary; however, two interventions are recommended: the first in autumn and the second at the start of the growing season with copper and wettable sulfur to prevent major adversities.
