Description
Red Gooseberry Rokula. A cultivar with good vigor and productivity, featuring few thorns and an upright growth habit. Suitable for both home cultivation and industrial plantations. Dark red, medium-large, spherical fruit with smooth skin, high sugar content, and aromatic flavor. Ripens from late June to early August.
Gooseberry Ribes grossularia L. (Saxifragaceae) A low-vigor bushy shrub, ranging in height from 50 to 150 cm, with thorny branches. Production mainly occurs on two-year-old branches from mixed or flowering buds. The flowers, generally self-fertile, are single and can be quite large.
PLANTING: Can be cultivated throughout Italy but is sensitive to drought; prefers loose soils, and for heavy soils, add fertilized peat to the planting hole. Planting distance: 0.50 to 1 m within the row and 200-250 cm between rows.
CULTIVATION: A hardy crop that requires minimal care, with supplemental irrigation during the summer and balanced mineral fertilization with a predominance of nitrogen in spring and organic fertilization in late autumn. Can also be grown in pots, ensuring frequent watering and fertilization with slow-release fertilizers or fertigation.
TREATMENTS: In dry environments and for hobbyist cultivation, fungicide treatments are usually not necessary; however, two interventions are recommended: the first in autumn and the second at the start of the growing season with copper and wettable sulfur salts to prevent major adversities.
