Description
Salicornia, also known as Sea Asparagus or Poor Man's Salt, has fleshy, succulent leaves that are ideal for raw consumption.
The best way to cook it, however, is to blanch it quickly in unsalted water and dress it with oil and lemon: it makes a perfect side dish for fish-based dishes.
The stems, once blanched, can also be preserved in oil.
Growing Tips
For pot cultivation, these general Orto Mio guidelines should be adapted to the species and local conditions. For timing and spacing, follow the plant label.
Exposure and Water Requirements
The Orto Mio 2025 catalog indicates a sunny position and a water requirement of 1 notch out of 4 on the producer's scale. The scale compares the needs of the species: it does not indicate a watering frequency. Adjust watering to the conditions of the soil, pot, and climate.
Soil and Container
For pot cultivation, choose a container proportional to the plant, quality soil, and good drainage. Moisten the root ball before transplanting.
Pot Irrigation
Check the moisture of the soil: frequency and quantity depend on the species, pot size, growth, heat, and wind. Avoid water stagnation. These general guidelines should be adapted to the plant's needs.
