Il consiglio dell'ortolano
Eliminate dry cracks in the soil and water generously in the summer.

Description

Historic and established variety of San Marzano, among the tastiest, with a strong and productive plant and high-quality fruits. Excellent when consumed in salads, for sauces and condiments. Very long berries, with a characteristic banana shape, full and fleshy. With a late cycle, it can be grown both in greenhouses and in open fields. A rustic plant against diseases, resistant to common root pathologies. Water consistently from the fruit swelling phase, avoiding waterlogging.

Growing Tips

Orto Mio guidelines for the species, to be adapted to the variety, local climate, and cultivation in soil or pots.

Exposure and Temperature

Choose full sun; in summer, a slight shading during the central hours is helpful. Optimal growth at 20–24 °C; protect early transplants from the cold.

Soil and Transplanting

Fertile and draining soil, preferably pH 6–7. Transplanting from March, under protection, to August, depending on the climate. Generally space 40–50 cm in the row and 100 cm between rows; for sauce varieties, even 30 cm in the row.

Watering

Water regularly at the base, allowing the surface to dry between interventions. Increase water during flowering and fruit swelling; avoid waterlogging and sudden shifts from drought to heavy watering.

Fertilization

Incorporate mature organic matter before transplanting. Distribute nutrients throughout the cycle, emphasizing potassium in production and avoiding excess nitrogen.

Care and Harvesting

Mulch. For stake tomatoes, provide supports and periodically remove suckers; do not remove them for dwarf varieties. Harvest according to the variety and use: for sauce, prefer well-ripened fruits. Cut the stem if detaching risks damaging the plant.
