Description

Among the most renowned varieties of San Marzano, suitable for greenhouses and open fields, with a robust plant and high productivity. Firm and plump berries, weighing over 130 g. Good flavor and fruit shelf life, ideal for salads and sauces. Resistant to splitting and many root diseases. Water consistently from the fruit swelling phase, avoiding waterlogging.

Growing Tips

Orto Mio guidelines for the species, to be adapted to the variety, local climate, and cultivation in soil or pots.

Exposure and Temperature

Choose full sun; in summer, light shading during the hottest hours is beneficial. Optimal growth at 20–24 °C; protect early transplants from cold.

Soil and Transplanting

Fertile and well-draining soil, preferably pH 6–7. Transplanting from March, under protection, to August, depending on the climate. Generally space 40–50 cm apart in the row and 100 cm between rows; for sauce varieties, even 30 cm in the row.

Watering

Water regularly at the base, allowing the surface to dry between waterings. Increase water during flowering and fruit swelling; avoid waterlogging and sudden shifts from drought to heavy watering.

Fertilization

Incorporate mature organic matter before transplanting. Distribute nutrients throughout the cycle, emphasizing potassium for production and avoiding excess nitrogen.

Care and Harvesting

Mulch. For stake tomatoes, provide supports and periodically remove suckers; do not remove them for dwarf varieties. Harvest according to the variety and use: for sauce, prefer well-ripened fruits. Cut the stem if detaching risks damaging the plant.
