Avoid water stagnation

Description

The onion for spring onion produces tender and white spring onions to be consumed fresh. It should be transplanted in full sun and with 3/5 cm of space between plants. It is practically a young onion with a delicate and non-pungent flavor. Avoid water shortages close to harvest to enhance the sweetness of the tender stalks.
Transplanting from January to November

Growing Tips

Orto Mio guidelines for the species, to be adapted to the variety, local climate, and cultivation in soil or pots.

Exposure and Temperature

Prefer sun. Favorable growth at 10–21 °C; bulb formation and growth require higher temperatures. Strong fluctuations can promote pre-flowering.

Soil and Transplanting

Well-draining soil, pH 6–7; raise the beds in heavy soils. Generally 10–15 × 30 cm for bulbs, 5 × 30 cm for spring onions. Short-day varieties: October–November; long-day varieties: March–May.

Watering

In the early stages, water only if necessary. During drought and bulb swelling, increase regularity, avoiding waterlogging. Adjust watering according to rainfall and soil conditions.

Fertilization

Apply manure in advance, in the previous autumn, avoiding applications close to transplanting. Balanced nutrition during growth.

Care, Harvesting, and Storage

Shallow hoeing. For bulbs to be stored, wait for the natural bending of the stalk and the lodging of the leaves. Dry in a ventilated place protected from rain, then store in a dry place, periodically removing any damaged bulbs.
