Plum Prunus domestica (rosaceae)

The described varieties derive from different species; for simplicity, we will distinguish the Japanese-Chinese type plums from the European group plums; the former, more sensitive to spring frosts, often have large, aromatic, and juicy fruits, while the latter, less sensitive to frost due to late flowering, are hardier with sweet and firm fruits. The plum tree adapts well to all soils, even tolerating moist ones without waterlogging.

PRUNING: Limit to very light pruning to maintain shape and thin the center of the tree. Several self-sterile varieties fruit only with the presence of other pollinators from the same group to be planted together for about 10%. Planting distance from 5x3 to 4x5 m.

Pest treatments

Monilia: affects during flowering and fruit set and near ripening. The use of products containing “triforine” or “benzamidazoles” or “copper-based” can help.

Corineo and Anthracnose: evident with holey leaves; it is very concerning for early defoliation, and therefore defense should be carried out every year at the start of vegetative growth and after 15 days with products based on Tiram or Dodine.

Bacterial canker: dark spots on the underside of leaves that then dry out and fall prematurely. Preventively treat with copper-based products in winter and then during bud swelling.
