Description

The yellow "canary" melon is one of the most appreciated melons in the height of summer, being among the sweetest and most refreshing. It is also known as the “winter melon” due to its excellent shelf life. The flesh is very pleasant, crunchy, and sugary.

Porthos is one of the most high-performing professional varieties: extremely productive, with uniformly sized fruits that can exceed 2.5 kg in weight.

It has a vigorous plant with a very strong root system, adaptable even to exploited soils and extreme climatic conditions of hot and dry summers.

Porthos is easy to cultivate, also thanks to a rare package of resistances in this type of melon, which includes powdery mildew, aphids, and fusarium (Fom 0.1).

Moderate nitrogen and potassium-rich fertilizations are recommended.

Bio treatments with copper are appreciated in case of rain and if the vegetation appears very lush.

Water moderately, suspending irrigation in the final stages of ripening to enhance the sugar content of the fruits and prolong shelf life.

Porthos has a late maturation cycle and is harvested when the skin turns a deep yellow, almost orange; easily distinguishable by comparing the more advanced ripening fruits with the unripe, lighter ones.
