Description

The San Marzano and oval summer pole tomato Thunder (formerly Oskar) F1 is a beautiful variety, with a plant of good vigor and high productivity. How to prepare for the transplant:

SOIL AND EXPOSURE : it adapts to any type of soil, preferring medium-textured, fresh, fertile and well-drained soil. In a sunny position, sheltered from the wind.

CLIMATE : ideal growth temperature of 20-24°, between 0 and -2° the plant risks death. For fruit setting the optimal minimum temperature is 9-13°, maximum 22-24°; above 32° the pollen loses vitality.

TRANSPLANTING TIME AND METHOD : in a greenhouse from February, from the end of March to April 15th in the open field with protection. Then without protection. It is advisable to bury a good quantity of organic substance in the hole at transplanting (if this has not been done previously) and to add good quality soil to the area surrounding the root. The tomato seedling, unlike other species, can be planted deeper if desired, burying more than half the stem if well developed.

FERTILIZATION : a couple of weeks before transplanting, bury a generous amount of organic matter, and a little good quality ternary fertilizer. When transplanting, spread 2 handfuls of good quality soil around the root ball of the seedling. After transplanting, fertilize every 3-4 weeks, favoring the supply of phosphorus and nitrogen in the early stages, until a well-developed plant is formed. Potassium from swelling to maturation.

WATERING : abundant at transplanting, then continue keeping the soil cool, carefully avoiding stagnation. Check the formation of cracks, which disperse water, eliminating them with periodic superficial working of the soil. Abundantly water in the height of summer, with high temperatures. Reduce watering in the presence of many ripe fruits.

PROTECTION : in very early transplants and in hilly areas it is useful to plant on ground covered with mulch and protect the plants with agrovelo, supported on arches. After 2-4 weeks the agrovelo can be removed.

CARE AND MAINTENANCE : when the plant reaches 30 cm in height it should be tied to a support (cane, stake or string). Remove the axillary shoots leaving only the top except for the determinate (dwarf) varieties for sauce and table.

TREATMENTS : it is advisable to treat frequently with Bordeaux mixture (copper). Other products as needed.

PRODUCTION AND HARVEST : from 4-5 kg to 9-10 in the greenhouse.

STORAGE : depending on the variety and stage of ripeness, they can be stored for 5-15 days in the refrigerator at 3-6°.

COMPANION : They can benefit from the proximity of carrots, chicory, lettuce, cabbage, radishes, basil and spinach.

ADVERSITIES : Pathologies: downy mildew, tracheomycosis, bacteriosis. Animal parasites: aphids, red spider mite (mites), bedbugs. Viruses.

CLIMATIC ADVERSITIES : fruit scorching, cracking due to excess water, frost, root asphyxia and apical rot due to drought.
