Kiwi Actinidia Chinensis Pl. (Actinidiaceae)
Very vigorous and ornamental sarmentose climbing plant, requires support for espalier or pergola cultivation. Dioecious plant with pistillate female individuals and staminiferous male ones. Plant 1 male plant and 3-6 female plants. The fruit is very rich in vitamin C. Harvest end of October-beginning of November.
PLANTATION: It can be grown throughout Italy but fears drought, prefers loose, deep, well-draining soils rich in organic matter. Requires frequent watering. Planting distance from 2.5x4 to 4x4 m.
CULTIVATION: Rustic crop, requires little care, balanced mineral fertilization with a prevalence of nitrogen in spring and organic fertilization in late autumn, on calcareous soils add sequestrene iron.
PRUNING: At planting, leave 2 or 3 buds per branch; in the following years, keep 6 to 8 branches with 5-8 buds each and eliminate the branches that have produced. Prune during the winter.
TREATMENTS: In dry environments and for hobby cultivations, anti-cryptogamic treatments are not necessary.
