Suitable for temperate and warm climates; fears frost during flowering although the best varieties flower later than the old cultivars. Requires dry and calcareous soils. Self-sterile, requires pollinators from other varieties. The fruit can be harvested green for immediate consumption or for dried.

Growing Tips

Reception and planting

Place the plant in soil worked with deep ploughing of 70 cm or working the soil to make it soft and airy by making a hole of 50 x 50 x 50 cm. The plants supplied in pots give excellent results allowing planting in any season, even during fruiting as the root system is not damaged.

Fertilization

At the end of winter, after the buds have swollen, use an organic fertilizer supplemented with nitrogen such as ammonium nitrate; for the most demanding species and for plants that tend to yellow, add iron, sequestrene and microelements. It is good practice to fertilize with small doses even at the end of summer. After distribution, the fertilizer should be lightly buried.

Maintenance

Water well especially in dry periods and the first years after planting. Hoe the soil at the base of the trees at least once a year, limit the growth of weeds that can compete with the root system of the tree.

Treatments

Winter treatments are particularly important, during the vegetative rest period and when the buds are swelling. When the vegetative growth resumes, check especially for aphid attacks. Also during the winter, the wounds on the trunk and branches should be protected with mastic. For all treatments, scrupulously follow the instructions on the packages.
