Description

Berkeley Blueberry American giant medium ripening. Vigorous cultivar with good productivity, open habit. Excellent variety for the quality of its fruits. Large fruit, light blue-pruinose, spherical, medium-large peduncular scar, firm, pleasant flavor but not very aromatic.

Vase 18 x 13 x 13 cm

Characteristics of Blueberry:

Bushy shrubby plant with an erect habit, between 100 and 200 cm tall, with semi-woody branches and limbs and deciduous foliage that takes on beautiful autumn colours, decorative flowering. Large, abundant blue-purple fruits, highly appreciated fresh or in jam. Production occurs mainly on branches that are two or more years old from mixed or flowering buds. The flowers, generally self-fertile, are gathered in cylindrical clusters. Pollination is facilitated by entomofauna. Deciduous leaves of an elongated-ovate shape, in autumn they acquire the typical red colour. Perennial plant that can produce for many decades.

PLANTATION: It can be grown throughout Italy but fears drought and calcareous soils. It prefers loose soils, well endowed with organic substance and tending to be acidic; if this is lacking, add acid fertilized peat to the hole. In warm regions it can be protected by shade cloths. It requires frequent watering. Planting distance: 0.50 to 1 m. on the row and 200-250 cm between the rows.

CULTIVATION: Rustic crop, requires little care, emergency irrigation in the summer period and balanced mineral fertilization with a prevalence of nitrogen in spring and organic fertilization in late autumn. It can also be grown in pots, taking care of frequent irrigation and fertilization with slow-release fertilizers or with fertigation.

PRUNING: When planting, slightly shorten the branches; in the following years, eliminate the old branches and favor new, more vigorous ones and thin out the foliage to favor the lighting. Prune during the winter.

TREATMENTS: In dry environments and for hobby crops, fungicide treatments are usually not necessary, however two treatments are recommended, the first in autumn and the second at the vegetative restart with copper salts and wettable sulphur to prevent the main adversities.
