Description

Redcurrant. Medium-vigour cultivar, with an expanded habit, with a high suckering ability: it gives excellent yields in deep, fresh, well-drained soils rich in organic matter. The plants, with drooping branches, should generally be trained with a stake and are suitable for cultivation under tunnels or in greenhouses; harvesting is carried out with repeated passages. Fruit: 10-12 berries/bunches, large, bright red, ellipsoid, with few seeds, firm, very juicy. Self-fertile. Ripens in June-July.

CURRANT Rubus idaeus L. (Rosaceae)

A bushy, basitonous shrubby plant, quite vigorous, between 50 and 200 cm tall, with erect branches and limbs, production occurs mainly on two-year-old branches from mixed or flowering buds. The flowers, generally self-fertile, are gathered in pendulous racemes (bunches). Deciduous leaves, simple palmate lobed with a more or less rounded toothed margin.

PLANTATION: It can be grown throughout Italy but fears drought, prefers loose soil, on heavy soils add fertilized peat to the hole. In warm regions it should be planted in semi-shaded places. It requires frequent watering. Planting distance: 0.80 to 1 m on the row and 200-250 cm between rows.

CULTIVATION: Rustic crop, requires little care, emergency irrigation in the summer period and balanced mineral fertilization with a prevalence of nitrogen in spring and organic fertilization in late autumn. It can also be grown in pots, taking care of frequent irrigation and fertilization with slow-release fertilizers or with fertigation.

PRUNING: When planting, leave 2 or 3 buds per branch; in the following years, keep 6 to 8 branches and eliminate the branches that have produced. Prune in late winter.

TREATMENTS: In dry environments and for hobby crops, fungicide treatments are usually not necessary, however two treatments are recommended, the first in autumn and the second at the vegetative restart with copper salts and wettable sulphur to prevent the main adversities.
