Plum tree Prunus domestica (rosaceae)

The varieties described derive from different species, for simplicity we will distinguish the plums of the Chinese-Japanese type from the plums of the European group; the first more sensitive to spring frosts have fruits often large aromatic and succulent, the second less sensitive to frosts due to late flowering are more rustic with sweet and consistent fruits. The plum tree adapts well to all soils, tolerates even humid ones without stagnation.

PRUNING: Limit yourself to very light pruning to maintain the shape and thin out the center of the tree. Many self-sterile varieties only bear fruit in the presence of other pollinators of the same group, planted together for about 10%. Planting distance from 5x3 to 4x5 m.

Anti-parasitic treatments

Monilia: strikes during flowering and fruit setting and near fruit ripening. The use of products containing “triforines” or “benzamidazoles” or “coppers” can help.

Coryneum and Anthracnose: it is evident with leaves with holes; it is very fearful due to early defoliation and therefore the defense must be done every year at the vegetative restart and after 15 days with products based on Tiram or Dodine.

Bacterial canker: blackish spots on the underside of the leaves which then dry up and fall prematurely. Treat preventively with copper products in winter and then during bud swelling.
