GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS

The Plumbago genus belongs to the Plumbaginaceae family and includes plants native to the temperate climate regions of Asia and are also known by the name of PLUMBAGINE or BLUE JASMINE.

These are evergreen plants, with a shrubby and climbing habit, with a very varied appearance in terms of very disorderly growth with stems that can develop up to 4.5 m in spontaneous plants, but if grown and appropriately placed on supports, they allow for very decorative and more contained plants.

They are plants used as climbers that in summer produce very beautiful blooms.

The flowers, gathered in spike-shaped inflorescences 20 to 30 cm long, are blue or red in colour depending on the species and variety and consist of a tubular part approximately 4 cm long which opens into a corolla formed by 5 petals and approximately 2.5 cm wide.

MAIN SPECIES

There are about ten species among which we remember

Plumbago capensis or auriculata

Plumbago capensis is native to South America and is known as BLUE JASMINE and is the most widespread and cultivated.

It is a climbing plant that can reach 2 m in height if grown at home. Both the stems and the branches are woody and have petiolate leaves of a beautiful intense green, oval and up to 5 cm long.

The flowers are light blue, gathered in groups of 20 to form spikes 25-30 cm long.

There are several varieties that differ from each other in the different color of the flowers such as the "Alba" variety with white flowers.

CULTIVATION TECHNIQUE

They are rustic plants that do not present particular cultivation difficulties.

They cannot stand the cold, especially when young, in fact temperatures must not fall below 10°C. High summer temperatures are better tolerated.

They love light so they should be exposed to full light and even direct sunlight for a few hours but not during the hottest hours of the day.

It can be grown in pots or outdoors in temperate climates as long as they are positioned so that they do not receive direct sunlight during the hottest hours of summer days and are sheltered from drafts.

If they are raised outdoors and the winter season suddenly has extreme temperature changes, be sure to protect the roots and stem with straw, peat or non-woven fabric sheets. In any case, it can be safely raised in case and taken outdoors only during the good season.

Remember in any case that it fears frost.

Since they are climbing plants, it is preferable to provide them with supports such as trellises or even simple poles to which the branches will be fixed. If it is not fixed to a support, it will have a drooping habit.

WATERING

During the growing season, that is, from spring to summer, it should be watered abundantly and it is necessary to wait until the soil is dry on the surface before carrying out the next irrigation.

Be careful of water stagnation which is not tolerated.

It loves a humid environment so it should be sprayed regularly until the flowers appear and then suspended so as not to stain them. It is preferable to spray the plants early in the morning and never when it is in the sun.

SOIL TYPE - REPOTTING

Repot at the beginning of spring using a slightly larger pot than the previous one up to a maximum of 30 cm using good fertile soil. Once this size is reached, remove only the first 3-5 cm of soil and renew with fresh soil.

It is important to place gravel or pieces of pottery on the bottom of the pot to help excess water drain away quickly as it cannot tolerate water stagnation.

Personally I recommend using terracotta pots even though many people opt for plastic pots (less expensive and with more drainage holes). I think terracotta ones are preferable because, being porous, they allow the soil to breathe.
